This is my second FAQ session and I decided to dedicate it to a dilemma every new blogger faces at some point: How much social media exposure does my blog need?
So you've put your blog together, either on one of the common blogging platforms like Blogger or Wordpress or you may even have created your own website from scratch (like I did through weebly.com). You've spent hours formatting, writing & selecting pictures and are finally ready to share your first post with the world. Woohoo! Well done!
It's a pretty cool feeling knowing that you've created something unique that is out there now in the www for everybody to see! But wait, will anybody see it at all? How are people going to know your blog even exists? That's where social media joins the party!
There's a plethora of icons you can show on your site through which people all over the world can connect with your blog: Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Bloglovin, Twitter... and many more. But do you need all of them? Well, that depends on the purpose of your blog.
If you are a full-time blogger expecting to make a good living out of your passion - may that be travel, fashion, cooking... the possibilities are endless! - then you might want to be present on as many platforms as possible to increase your chances of reaching your target audience.
Most professional bloggers seem to have an endless supply of ideas and some even have a team of people dedicated to coming up with new content for the various platforms.
But what if blogging is just a hobby to you and you don't want the stress of having to post on seven different social media accounts in addition to keeping your website up to date?
I'm sure we have all seen social media posts at some point or another that felt rather forced and weren't necessarily giving us any new information. Just coming up with anything to post on your platforms because you feel you need to put something out there regularly can be a bit overwhelming. So if you just want to share your passion with other people, inspire them, put your stories & experiences out there without the pressure to produce a sustainable income then I personally believe a small, carefully curated selection of social media icons should do the trick. Concentrate on your blog and go for quality instead of quantity!
For the first couple of months of Global Hippie Glam being live I rarely even mentioned to people that I had a blog. I had no social media icons on my site and only shared its web address in one single forum of like-minded people. I thought nobody's ever going to read it but over time my statistics showed that people did click on my link and wanted to see the website! Now, with more posts to show and a proper layout I was ready to promote my page and reach out to my target audience - which is mainly women of all ages interested in traveling. And that's when I had to think long and hard about how much time I want to invest in this project, how often do I want to post and what do I want to achieve with this blog in the long run?
Here are some answers I've come up with for my travel blog:
#1 Full-time or Hobby Blogger?
Right now definitely hobby blogger - I luckily don't depend on any generated income from Global Hippie Glam and for now I just enjoy sharing my ideas and experiences with the world.
That said, you never know what the future holds... ;)
#2 Why aren't you on Instagram?
Fair question and the answer to that is pretty simple:
I'm a camera nerd - I like to take my pictures with a proper camera and see them on my PC first before deciding which ones to post. Unfortunately, at this point Instagram is mainly meant for smartphone users and there's no easy way to upload pictures from a laptop.
And to be fair, the camera on my current smartphone wouldn't impress anybody! That said, with my next mobile upgrade (or if Instagram brings out a version suitable for camera geeks anytime soon) I might revisit this option... After all, my blog is mainly about inspiring people through pictures!
Edit - Global Hippie Glam is finally on Instagram (as of March 2017). I had to get a new phone and it turned out the camera isn't too bad at all! That said, most of my pictures are still taken with my Canon camera and then transferred onto my cell for uploading ;)
#3 What about Youtube?
True, a lot of travel bloggers use Youtube to give their followers a better way to experience the different destinations - and I readily admit I love watching other bloggers' videos! However, Global Hippie Glam is all about pictures. Different people like different things. Some find inspiration in travel stories and photos, others prefer watching travel documentaries and following vloggers. I might post the occasional video in future but I doubt I'm a born Youtuber ;)
#4 So what social media platforms does Global Hippie Glam use?
After a long list of pros & cons, talking to friends and researching the various social media platforms online I came to the conclusion that Facebook was a good starting point! I already have a private FB account and making the page for Global Hippie Glam was super quick - it was the easiest thing I could do to promote my blog!

Things to make your life in the air more comfortable:
8) Cabeau Evolution Pillow memory foam travel pillow - the cover is machine washable & has a small pocket on the side for iPods and it's super space-efficient once rolled up & stored in its own little bag.
